Treasury respond to FOI request on sugar tax costs

People against Sugar Tax has received confirmation today from HM Treasury that they don't know how much taxpayers' money has been spent on designing and consulting on the sugar tax over the last ten months.

The Treasury were responding to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request sent two weeks ago, asking for this information.

"Over the last ten months, the Treasury will have spent significant amounts of taxpayer money on designing and consulting on the sugar tax. This includes drafting in people from other parts of the Treasury to work on the sugar tax, finding replacements for these people, legal fees, and the resources spent on the public consultation carried out in the late summer of 2016. "

"And today, the Treasury have responded by saying 'it is not possible' to calculate these costs. Surely any organisation or government department would have the required systems in place to know what these costs are."
